My experiences on the Dubai Metro
My First Metro Ride!
So today (yesterday now!) I was going to join the mass group of 600+ people who wanted to ride the metro on the first day. However, when I got to the station I couldn't tell who was who so i just got on the train anyway! I stopped at each station to take a few pictures, sometimes jumping back on before the doors closed (in some stations they stopped for a few minutes, others shorter) other times waiting for the next train.

Got some good pictures passing along Sheikh Zayed Road (will post those later) and also at the end of the line at Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station.

All was rosy, I had parked at Rashidiya and got off at MOE.

I met a friend to see a film at MOE, we had a coffee and at 10pm off I trotted to get back on the metro to go back to Rashidiya to pick up my car - or so I thought!

At the entrance to MOE station were about 2-300 people queing to get in. The guy at the door then said that the station was full, no-one else was going in and they were trying to get more empty trains. He couldn't promise however that there would be enough trains to take everyone. One guy I spoke to said that in fact it was unlikely there would be enough and I would probably have to get a taxi back to Rashidiya!!! As you can imagine I was not best impressed having left my car at home in the first place.

So then lucky for me my friend had not left MOE so she gave me a lift to NH&T station where I got on one of the empty trains that were leaving there.

When I got to MOE the whole world and his dog got on (well not the dog as that is against the by-laws :-) ) and we slowly headed to Rashidiya. After what seemed an age, and after a number of children pressed the emergency call button, which just happened to be at exactly their height, we pulled into Rashidiya at 11.45pm. Never was I so happy to see my car :-)

I guess the first day was always going to be busy but it probably would have helped if they hadn't let people on for free for a joy ride rather than letting people on who had legitimate cause to use it!
Dubai Metro Blogging
I am not going to be blogging a huge amount about the metro I don't think but if you click the link in the left navigation bar for other blogs then you will see a great blog - Urban Vision 999 - where you can read some great blogging about the Metro :-)
Dubai Metro is Open!
So tonight His Highness Sheikh Mohammed officially opened the Dubai Metro at 09:09 (or something close to it!). The Mall of the Emirates was filled with VIP's, officials, gold ticket winners and metro enthusiasts to witness the opening.

This stunning picture was taken by Alex Jeffries of Clear and Transparent Design at the opening tonight.

Apologies to those who have commented up until now as I neglected to set up and alert to notify me of comments so that I could approve them. This is now done and all are approved :-)
Metro Zone Information
So I have to admit to being a bit confused on the zones. I have seen 3 different summaries of which zones contain which stations. I have posted what could be the zones on the stations page but I think it will only be totally clear once the Metro is open and we can go and have a look.
Is it 09/09/09 or 10/09/09?
Well I have to say that I am pretty disappointed that the Dubai Metro will only open to the general public on 10th September. It appears (from the little information that is given out by the RTA) that the 9th is only for invited guests and VIP's. So the real test will be when people actaully try and use it to get to work on 10th, although I'm not sure how many will without doing a test run first which I would guess means it is going to be pretty busy on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th. Shame it doesn't open until later on Friday.

So I will go and take my first ride on 10th unless any kind soul has a spare VIP ticket or a ticket for 9th that they can't use because they have to work? :-)
Got my Nol Silver card today
So I went to Mall of the Emirates in search of a Nol Silver card. I asked at the customer service desk and they said they didn't have them yet and that I would have to get them at the RTA offices. So then I was in Carrefour and as I was paying I saw they had stickers on the tills with the Nol cards on so I got one there,

I have a few questions about how it is all going to work but I guess we will find out as things go on. Like - is it going to be the same as in the UK where you just swipe the card and if you use more than 14 dirhams worth in one day then it stops charging you (i.e. daily rate) or do you buy a daily ticket at the start?
First blog posting!
Well I guess this could be a bit like twitter but instead of being limited to 140 characters I can ramble on about anything I like!

I'm going to go and see if I can get on the Metro on 9th September. So far I haven't seen any news about what time it will be opening - maybe 9pm?! Gives them a few extra hours.

I have heard rumours that the a/c is not yet working and they will have to open and close it in a few days so we'll see what happens...
